The South American equivalent is Argentine Ombu 9Phytolacca diocea). There is one for sale on e-bay. They are drought tolerant and grow very fast if anyone is interested. There are photos of them as bonsai in the archives.

Got 2 myself. Both gifts and grown from seed 2 years ago. They go dormant over winter, so I found just a little water every few days kept them going. This last season they really shot off and are thickening up nicely. Really funky trunk on one of them the other is a little more plain, but both are growing well and will get a solid chop back next summer so they can shorten down and thicken up for down the track

Hello, a good mate gave me a boab seedling last spring.. it has gone quite well considering i left it in amongst my '''wait and see collection'''... ill get some pics if anyone is keen.. ( it has thrown its first main branch and has re positioned itself it the pot to get more sun... it is very healthy).. i love aussie natives... even African natives
