Thats great just a few tips try to collect material (olives) that have mature bark as ive got trees that ive had for 20yr an the smooth bark has barely changed . Another thing stay away from straight material go for odd ,diffrent,strange etc as a great bonsai would be in there you just have to find it

Olivecrazy, cheers for the advice. I have no plans to rape and pilage the area. I do however plan to take my time in what I select to dig, so advice such as this is invaluable to a young fella like myself. (If you can call 34yo young... )

Ok, I know I'm new, and an impatient little shite at times, but this olive has done nothing since I potted it up. Should I be concerned?

No, not really. It can take a while for an olive to shoot. I have some from the start of the year that still haven't done anything.

If you scratch the bark and its still green its all good. I haven't found any tips to get them to bud maybe someone else can help.

Hi Raymond,
The comments time8theuniverse are very applicable. There appears to be quite a bit of green showing. This tree will take many months to develop new roots and show significant growth. You will need to leave the tree and not disturb it for 12 months. Are you giving it a drink of Seasol each week?

The comments time8theuniverse are very applicable. There appears to be quite a bit of green showing. This tree will take many months to develop new roots and show significant growth. You will need to leave the tree and not disturb it for 12 months. Are you giving it a drink of Seasol each week?

Yes, I religiously Seasol all my trees on Sundays. Powerfeed alternate weeks...

Hi Raymond,
Mate, I would be a bit careful in giving this tree any fertilizer at this stage of it's development. Personally I would only be giving it Seasol. Latter when you see growth starting would be a good time to introduce liquid fertilizer.

This tree was dug on the 14 Sept 2013. Today is 22Jan 2014 and still NOTHING!!! If I scratch the cambium, it is still green, but it has not fired a shot, should I be worried? I water it, it gets Seasol once a week, I am a little bit disappointed that I have nothing to show by now...

Raymond, go and make yourself a nice cup of tea mate. Plenty of time left for the little fellow to shoot, really. These damn things can take anything up to a year before they do anything, but a word of warning. Be ready!!! I found with a few of the ones I had that took their own sweet time to shoot that once they did, they went off like gangbusters.

As long as the bark is green your tree is fine, mate. Honest.

X2. If you are like me and in the habit of checking everyday, they wont budge. The moment you take your eyes and thoughts off them, they shoot.
