[ID] What species is this hedge?

I'm in California, so entering the heart of autumn now, and the berries are starting to look a little more cotoneaster like.

There was a cotoneaster bonsai at the Canberra bonsai show last weekend. I think it is probably the same species as Michael's hedge.

Should be better quality pics on Canberra Bonsai society website now (or soon?)
Maybe there's some hope for making decent bonsai from this species, even if it is cotoneaster ;)
