Shedding older leaves as new spring growth starts to open - mine do the same thing every year in the first week of October. :)

BTW, this one should be a cracker of a tree when done - love it.

Thanks wrcmad. I was getting a bit worried there. It will be a cracker. Fingers crossed all the grafts take. Counting on these.

If you're still nervous about the yellow leaves, you could proactively use a systemic fungicide/insecticide to hold off any possible problems.

I use Yates Rose Shield because it's cheap and seems to target the major problems/pests (I get the concentrated stuff and mix my own). But I'm no expert.

This old fella was struggling because it was being attacked by scales. They well so well hidden that I couldn't really see amongst all the growth. I tried picking them out but there were too many do i ended up defoliating. Hope I haven't done this too early in the season.

I am not liking the length too much but just don't have the courage to chop it low. Any ideas how I can improve on it.
