Yup, it's happened to most of us….

I "started" bonsai by digging up a funky small-leafed little bush from sand-hills beside a beach when I was 17 (45 years ago) - watched the damn thing die in record time, and figured out I had a lot to learn. I still remember the shape of it.

'Bonsai - Culture and care of miniature trees' form sunset books + lots of enthusiasm does not necessarily equal success so, unlike all those others who were able to access proper classes and advice I killed quite a few before learning enough to keep one alive for any length of time.
Even after that the great weekend drought, Australia day weekend 1987 - when we went away for the weekend and the plumbers working next door on Friday disconnected the water then went home - killed almost every tree I had at that time However, relieved of the chore of looking after lots of sub standard sticks I was able to put all the theory and techniques I had learned into practice and have ended up with much better trees and less deaths since.

Still have that Sunset book that started it all if that counts for anything.

yep killed in record time, sister bought me an allepo pine for my 21st , had never even seen a bonsai before . Thought it would look good on my lounge coffee table and watered it maybe once a week but that tree got the bug going and i kept the pot and several years later took up the hobby and at least got to know how to keep them alive but still lose trees , such as in the summer went to tassie on holiday and the neighbour looked after them lost 4

Won, one ficus rubiginosa in 1980, it has survived the first 5 years of total bonsai ignorance sitting on the window ledge of the kitchen window.
Was given a copy of you to can grow Bonsai in Australia by Vita and Dorothy Koreshoff in 1985 and have not looked back since. Yes it is still thriving now.
My first ever own made Bonsai, was lost to me when the Mrs and I were on a trip and the person looking after them was negligent( was a fellow Bonsai enthusiast).
Lesson learned do not go away in summer.

My first, a Japanese Maple, is still a live and flourishing today. It does however show the many years of abuse which I caused in my pursuit to learn. There have been many other trees not as fortunate.

We all have to start somewhere though.

I killed it, but i still have it as a reminder to do better....

I've killed others too, but learned not what to do along the way....
It's a learning curve......

On the other side of it, i have some beautiful, healthy trees, that are well on their way, of that I'm very proud

Few days back may little tree was killed. I am afraid that was because of bad pest control arrangements. But still hoping to have another soon.

Which place is the best for bonsai ? Indoor or outdoor ?

Outside & being on the Gold Coast I guess you don't have much worry with frost. Should only come inside for display over short periods if required.
