Hi, well you are right of course, $100 was a lot to pay, but they knocked me back because they couldn't see or guarantee it wasn't dead either. LOL. But I liked it, and it was trained it appeared OK. This is the problem, my one was in full leaf, it came from Sydney. So I protected it in a hospital tank which is an old aquarium with lids. I remove them occasionally to circulate air. Our night temps are still minus C. Live and learn eh? I am glad I have you all helping me. This Hort IV on Bonsai is a major task. I spend hours researching and doing things I have never attempted.
And on line too. My co-ordinator is great. I keep in touch regularly with her, send pictures, and I have videos as well as hard copy thesis. It is just in fact worse really than 500 level post grad units,(on line), because there is hands on practical stuff involved. And with bonsai it has to cover all seasons. She is coming up to Armidale to see what I have achieved - so I am really pushed.

Repot,( tilt to the left @ 15 Deg), Root prune and remove crossing roots. Cut back hard and clean out the branching.

A Small informal upright using the line of trunk as shown. Hopefully show backshooting for back branches and you should be good. I tilted to the left to give some movement out of the ground as I do not like trees perpendicular to the soil unless formal style.

Ps for some reason, my Quickie verts I can never get the foliage shape right but hope it gives the idea of a nice rounded outline to the canopy with nice foliage pads and some negative space.

Yep that would work too so long as you can get even more tilt to it

I was wondering how long it takes these cuttings to root? I understand there is not a set amount of time, but in general...

Depend how old they are and how warm it is.
6 weeks for small ones and 3 months fro bigger.

Most of the cutting it took have died. I think I will be luck to end up with 4 or 5 with roots... Noobie mistakes I think. I'll have another go when this tree is cut back again, maybe on the weekend. The tree itself has flourished.

I've tried cuttings from a few trees now, all have taken a few months to show signs of life. Just keep watering and you might be surprised [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

Since my last post, this little "Bargain" has been powering along. I have trimmed it back 5 times since the repot...
