I remember when You collected the juniper...and the bougie too.
I would not work with a yamadori juniper on short competitions...That one you need to take your time with at a slow pace....but good interesting entries.

Yes I have not touched the roots at all on this one and will not for another year.
Only low impact top work.
I took updated pics today of each tree.

Re: Of bonsai competition results in
Ken, I would let the juni grow for now...no pinching...Remember you can kill it if you overdo the foliage reduction...
I have been appointed a consultant for WBFF. I just got an email that our next annual meeting will be in Australia in August...but I will not manage to come.
This year my program is hard on travels...and they told me too late.
I am itching to have a look of some trees in Australia, and this juniper too.
I was trained mostly in the traditional Japanese stile of styling junipers...you people (I think) like more natural trees.
At the moment your juni has no apex....you will need to select a small branch coming somewhere from the base of the branches and train as apex.
I made few fast virtuals for you to see what I mean

Re: Of bonsai competition results in
Nope no apex by design
on this tree as I do not like them
to me a Cascade does not need one as the apex of the tree should be bare and to me looks silly when they do.
Will have no foliage "pads" either. the foliage will all be very sparse.

Reminds me a lot of the workshop with Robert Steven, i noticed he leaned towards the 'sparse' look too, which I thought was quite nicekcpoole wrote:Nope no apex by designon this tree as I do not like them

No not a cascade per se, but rather windswept style.
the point is that the same idea applies to any tree that has the foliage lower than the apex. a bare top can to me look rather nice.

Apparently the forum belonged to a private individual who had a bonsai outlet...He closed his nursery and does not want the forum...So he closed it. We are trying to take it over or make a new one.Springbok wrote:Hi neli,hi all . Congrats to all participants and those that won prizes . @Neli what is the issue with the comp on the SABF ? I found this pine by accident today and it reminded me of your juniper...thought of showing it to you Ken...You can do similar as well, if you like it...just a thought.kcpoole wrote:Hi Neli and Xavier,Neli wrote:Ok I would like to see that as it progresses...I did not know it is a cascade....kcpoole wrote:Nope no apex by designon this tree as I do not like them

I keep trying to view the competition but their site has been down for a long time. Maybe it will be better when it comes back up.

Cheers, Karl
