Looking good so far mate. I'd probably leave the amount of roots but bind them closer together (not in tight bunches, but so more rock is visible). That way you'd see the rock more and you'd also get great flat roots once they fuse to the rock.

Great work so far.

Where's the rock?

I still can't see it!

Just looks like a Neagari style to me....
Pleasing enough though!
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Definitely. I just keep more roots than needed for now and slowly reduce them as not sure which one with survive/dry out.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

kevan4, what is that lovely praying icon you have beside your name. Is it a statue with moss on it?

Yeah, still a lot more work to finalise the design but I am happy with the current progress. Still some more root selection and refining and regrowing the branches to desired size...

Just some more updates...
I have just done some minor branch refining with simple wiring.
The roots have been thinning a bit further. Since I didn''t want to hit the rock with my rotary carving bit, I have used the manual carving tools to trim the scars from removing the roots. The back turns out better then I initially thought.
