You certainly have a great "starter" there. Don't forget, those thorns aren't really an issue because you can simply remove them without upsetting the plant.

Defoliated to make work easier.
Branch framework almost set - just have to decide between a few options at the rear of the tree once a bit of growth provides clarity.

That is coming along a cracker. Shame about the scar on the front as it does not look like it is healing quickly. Do you reckon it will roll over or is a carving job in order.

It's starting to roll over, but I reckon it's probably too big to ever fully heal.
I could carve it out, but that would inflict certain impending doom via rot on a bougie.
However, the root jobbie I had to do on this one has probably already sealed it's fate in that regard.
Best I can do is try to keep it sealed as well as possible for now, to prolong the inevitable, and maybe hide it with some foliage.
In the scenario that rot starts to run up from the root cuts, then it could be joined to the scar with carving.
This is always the story with bougies, unfortunately. Once you experience it, you realise very quickly why there aren't any generational bougie bonsai. It's a real shame considering their colour display.

Took me 18 months of looking (and asking), but finally secured one last month. It'll be a bit squeezy on the front-back axis because of the 200mm girth, but it'll go in.
