Is deadwood viable on Callistemon?
:lost: Dead wood is dead so it won't be viable but I guess you are really asking whether you should include dead wood in the design of a bonsai callistemon. In that case, :tu: Where these grow naturally along rivers they get smashed during floods so a great many of the ones I see growing wild feature dead wood. My waterswept callistemon has had parts converted to jin and shari to reflect that aspect of life in the river.
Haha, indeed that is what I meant Shibui. I know some trees aren't suitable for jin and was curious as to whether I could do it with this. I guess my main question was not so much whether I should take it off, but how much to take off. As you said, it's hard to judge from a photo, so I may have to just bite the bullet and do it!

It is easy to reduce the length of a jin at any stage in the future but a little more challenging to make it longer if you've cut it short.
