Hi Webos , mate i have a very colourful history with material and losing heaps of junipers but the crutches have gone , I'm damaged but able to . Have I learnt anything , yes , climate , position , watering and input from others is taken into account . Unfortunately I don't have a bigger/deeper pot just yet , the root mass was 100-150mm deep and i took only the downward growing roots off , these had very little fine roots , the rest were kept unless severed when dug which was much less than suggested I remove .

This tray/pot is 90mm deep inside , I did plan to place it in the scoria bed that it sitting in , this is where the other big mother survived the extreme heat however you cant move a grow bed . Come winter I will have a big pot and using the info from Avril I will follow her example reguarding top dressing's and impliment them into pot life as her example my not suit Bonsai blokes but it has grown better than some expect from a Shimpaku . I have already purchased a couple of bags of the potting mix she used and will blend that with scoria , curl grub deterant .I will then rob Peter and give it to Paul so to speak

I have taken 60 cuttings yesterday with many more to come off , then set numerous layers rather than cut back . I did get good info off Shibui before I Dug the tree , just haven't followed it to the letter in the pot department yet . I did contemplate a wooden box but curl grubs love them . My Phoenix graft Shimp is growing very well in the position next to where this resides and in the same mix , fingers crossed it will survive my rescue / torment and end up being many new additions to the dwindling collection of junipers .

Well its been a busy couple of days minimizing the waste on the trunk .I have taken 110 various types of cuttings and set 10 large layers most with multi trunks , there is another half a dozen single trunks/branches to layer before its all done and dusted . Having selectively set the layers on the branches that will be removed rather than cut them off as waste . After several close looks at the base noting the twin trunks it could be split into 2 very nice trunks , both with 50mm plus bases with 40 & 50mm trunks into the deal . I have several options so its worth considering .

Seriously though, that is one heck of an effort. Are you planning on selling/giving away such a large number of attempted propogations?

This is almost like an environmentally friendly 'How-to' on starter stock recycling.

Wow man that is a lot of cuttings haha, top effort mate.

The trunks look quite interesting and will make one or many very nice trees. Still a while off but you're off to a 10-20 year head start with this material.

Hi bbm' , Mate it does look like a wacky tobacky plant Selling maybe in a few years time or use them to complete my Phoenix grafts , giving away nah don't think so . Why cut it all back only to grow it again , better off layering off and shaping/styling as you go .

Hi Mo' mate the booty is better than first thought , 2 very good trunk with excellent side branches that will create good taper , the extra trunks will make for good shari or possibly more layers as the first layers were thoughtfully set above a side branch .

Another few hours to set the last of the layers on this Shimp' . With a total of 16 layer set its all done and dusted . I had to wrap ribbon around the branches and tie them together to support the 25 litres of potting mix used in the open pots and prevent the wind damaging the set layers .

Hi Mo' it's going and growing well . I took 90 % of the new growth shoots off for cutting and with another 50 new shoots alongating over the last few days it appears to be drinking plenty of liquid . The few shoots that were left on the branches have filled out , bit too much for residual enegy I would think .

In the process of erecting a hot house so when the cold really hits I can tuck it in there with the cuttings and figs .

Well these layers obviously got too wet over winter and have rotted the bark in the pot . Another lesson learned about layering junipers, but not a real loss as this was the foliage earmarked for removal . Still plenty of material to work with considering a barrow load has been removed as per the dead layers . In time when my hand heals I will have a good play with this bugger , maybe hack and chop it into little bits

Hi no idea , mate this one didn't make it unfortunately, I have numerous cuttings that survived . Plenty of lessons learned on this one .
