Have you poked around at the nebari yet?

For me the roots would dictate the new leader on this one if it were mine.

Although I am liking the idea of the windswept tree

Would the taper look a little odd having the thickness halve in one turn, then gradually tapering thinner?

I've had a little poke around the base, nothing to invasive though. The roots I found aren't very big, so there must be a lot happening under the soil. With all the attention I've been giving this one I'm not sure how it would react with me playing with its roots now.

I agree. I would train it out to one side to have something different. I would remove the ''new'' thin leader entirely.

My visualisation isn't the best, I was wondering if I could trouble one of you for a sketch?

And here's an update for this Mel. Not real work done over the last 2 years and has suffered a little from the neglect, so I chucked in some fresh soil and a dump of fertiliser.
