Onetree, I'm almost certain it's a Hinoki cypress. The seedlings look nothing like the mature tree from which I collected the seed. Similar to chinese juniper in that respect. Spikes turn into scales as the foliage matures.
Shouldn't it have a scale like foliage which grows horizontally and vertically? rather than a needle like foliage from your image.

Alan, the foliage becomes scale-like as the tree matures...I have monterey cypress and chinese juniper that are exactly the same. Immature foliage is spikey, but reverts to scales as the tree/branch matures. Some of my trees have both forms of foliage the same branch.
