Hey Mate,

What's going on with those large surface roots that appear to be wrapping around the base of the tree?

I think this guy would benefit from a ground layer. Anyone else thinking the same thing?
Yep that was my first thought too.
It has been left in the small pot for far too long when young and the roots wrapped around itself.

Cut back the trunk to the first big branch and use that as the new leader.

Hi Lolofied . If the maple was mine , just for the fun of it , I would try to fuse the circular roots into a 'dinner plate ' nebari . Something like this .

Whether i could achieve the image above wouldn't matter it would be interesting to try .The top of the tree I would keep it in a broom style .

Roots which curl around the trunk do not look as attractive as the picture you have used in the post. The post used I grafted. I would loosen the roots and if this can't be done, remove the roots. Considering what other roots it has. Over a period of time graft new roots.
