Shibui...perhaps some layers would be the go. .question if I may, other than the trunk itself, most branches are smallish, what's the thinnest branch you could air layer off...would pencil thickness be too thin? By the sounds of it, if one is patient enough and apply good technique, air layer is the preferred method..

There's some great Nurseries around Vic. with rare stock..obviously Yamina..but I've just come back from Tassie with a bunch of trees..I can highly recommend John who runs Manx plants near Davenport..he grows all sorts of rare and wonderful trees including Maples, Cedar and Pine..check out the website...

Does that include these dwarf vars? They do seem to be less hardy than the larger ones.

Haven't worked on dwarf ones yet. Don't really have the space for many more at the moment either, but i'll be sure to give them a go when i'm able to.

My layers on the green leaf variety root within one to two months. Never had any luck on a red leaf variety ( don't know the cultivar) . Any advice.

I too am a huge maple fan and as such have a few of the not so common varieties.

These include (from the top of my head)

Shishigashira, osakasuki, suminagashi, shirasawanum aureum (ugly grafts which I hope to rectify), Montpelier, monspessulanum (very slow growing), and also Acer buergerianum formosanum (Taiwan maple)

I'll check out some of these...I also have Osakasuki and Shishi but tub and garden specimens and not bonsai..Shishi must make for a great bonsai..!..How does the Taiwan Maple go and what is your favorite..?

The Shishi-gashira, and Taiwan are still on their way to becoming bonsai. I have seen some great shishigasha bonsai though. At the moment I am trying to air-layer the top off to make a little shohin clump which I think will be awesome if it layers ok. Taiwan maple seems to respond just like a standard trident maple however I believe they are semi deciduous. I have 3, and only one has ever dropped its leaves in autumn/winter. They also produce an abundance of seeds at this time of year.

Yes. ..the tightly clumped foliage of shishi makes a tree look older than it is. .... mine has some perfect branches to layer..I think I'll give this a go as well. .

Hope to get a forest of maples oneday..excited...

Shouldn't take too long in the grow boxes...they'll fly along for sure...
Put together a Trident forest this year, amongst a bunch of other forest plantings...7 small but old tree's - I'll get a few photo's up soon...
Forests are awesome....Maple forests are special..!!

I am a massive fan of maples but am far to close to the coast to get the full effect from them. I have persisted anyway and will happily struggle along with them. They are just too good. this one is a red leaf seedling. They fade to green as the weather gets hotter.
this one is fairly new. Mikawa yatsabusa according to the label?

This is my pride and joy maple
Its currently got a few air layers on it. It's only just come into full leaf, I love the iridescent green and soft leaf.

It's one of the dissectum varieties and normally has a better "shape" however had just finished raining so branches and leaves were droopy

In theory you should be able to layer any growth but if you are using ringbark technique the centre wood needs to be strong enough to support the top growth while roots form. In fact, the younger the wood the quicker it should be to root. I've often layered pencil thick growth.

Good luck with those layers Angus. Weeping dissectum vars are notoriously unreliable on their own roots. that you can keep some alive.

The parts I'm attempting to layer would've succumbed to the hedge trimmer anyway so if it doesn't work I haven't lost anything, but it is good practice for my layers at same time. Perhaps I'll grow a few extra Acer P and practice grafting?
