I have the exact same problem on most of my maples. Mainly on my tridents and a couple of my Japanese maples. If anything i thought o was under watering, especially with this hot spring we are having in sydney.
I dont think i would be over fertilizing either. I give power feed one week, seasol the next week and then charlie carp the next.
As for thewatering in direct sun theory - i have watered a couple of times in the mid day sun because of the coments above so this looks like the most probable cause to me at the moment. Or my watering.....

@homer911 i have to go back to Australian Bonsai Nursery and ask him to clarify "fungal" problem he was having at his nursery. This Trident i acquired from him 2 years ago.
i havent fertilize for weeks and always water twice a day. Early in the morning and at night. I dont think i under water it but i did notice that the trunk is slightly green. Fungal?
