I agree great move and good on you for having the confidence to flat bottom it. You will have a much greater nebari in the future and will improve the tree greatly in my eyes.

I think you are one brave person and I am following this thread with interest. If this trident powers on, you just set a new standard for me. (please update this thread no matter the result).
The after care from here would be crucial. The experts in this forum have both the knowledge and facility to pull off such a move.

If you want to get rid of the original base let me know.

Jow, I replanted the original base in the hope there may have been some buds down low enough for it to sprout.. What would you intend to do with it?
I was considering thread grafting into it, do you think that would work?

Otherwise could make a nice 'root stand'...

I was thinking of working with the re-shoots. If it shoots of course.

I think it will work. I maybe would have used peat/perlite but that's probably just as good.

Has it sprouted new roots as yet, it is a trident after all?

Hi Ben,

I did the same with the Ficus 10 months ago. The cutting was above the root like yours. I don't know whether you planted your cutting on top of the sphagnum moss or not. I did it with the Ficus and the root sprouted quite happily to say the least. I thought the sphagnum moss might cause rotting on the trunk but all is good. The Ficus is healthy.

I got inspired after watching this thread. Unfortunately I didn't take photos while I had it out of the pot though. I must admit I wasn't as confident as you seem so I took a little less.

Might have to pop a photo up next winter when I get it back out?

Does this method work on ficus? Ive got a few that could use this sort of treatment but I'm not wanting to kill them... Lovely looking tree by the way...
