I don't think lime sulphur is the only reason. Age plays it's part.
Everything gets dosed with lime sulphur in the Japanese nurseries. Over winter they spray multiple times yet the black pines for example don't have white trunks. From my experience the white colour wears off very quickly after a spray. I'll take some pics today of some maples that haven't been sprayed since winter that are displaying the white bark (I'm in Japan at the moment)
I have seen maples getting their younger parts painted to match the older grey bark on trees that had newly replaced branches. (also saw rocks being painted with Sumi ink but that's another story.)
