The supplier did not have as much Fine grade Akadama in stock, so I have got in some bags of Very fine graded as well.

Very fine Akadama is recommended for Shohin size trees. Grant prefers this size for his own propagating mix

To complement that grade I also have in stock 25KG bags of 1-4 mm Pumice. This is manufactured by Ausperl and is a by product of making Perlite. it is mineralogically identical to natural pumice and is a 1 for one replacement but is smaller particle size ( great for seed raising / shohin sise trees)


Prices are
$28 for Akadama and Kanuma 15L bag
$30 for Pumice 1-7mm natural or 1-4mm UXP (unexpanded Perlite)

Delivery can be arranged via Sendle to most places in OZ
$22 for a 10KG pack ( 2 x Kanuma)
$28 for a 25KG pack ( 2 x Akadama or 1 Pumice)

Just a heads up to all that I am just about out of fine grade Akadama,
The suppliers could not send the amount of that grade I wanted so had to get extra fine instead. ( not sure when they might get more in )
If you have shohin size tree then Extra fine grade be ideal.

I have lots of the other sizes and all grades of Kanuma available

As far as I know Akadama is akin to "Unobtanium" here at the moment as the previous supplier in Perth has run out and did not import any more

The bigger issue at the moment I have been advised buy the supplier that due to a unseasonably cold winter in Japan, no Akadama has been mined and will not be available for another 3- 4 months still

Stay tuned and I will update everyone when I have more info but Unless the moon falls, I will have some later in the year

I'm befuddled how it's possible to import a container load of foreign soils into Australia, when it's illegal to do so.
A quick google search (attached below) confirms Australia's position on bringing foreign soils into Australia.

Are the Japanese soils which are exported from Japan treated in Japan to meet Australian regulations or is it the importers responsibility (as noted in the above 'Australian Home Affairs' website).

Akadama and Kanuma are not "Soils"
They are respectively Low Fired / dried Clay and Pumice.
Hard Pumice is imported from New Zealand and sold thru Ausperl,

IMHO not much different than importing Rocks and pots as they are all inert but lets see what they say when I go thru the paperwork

I was unaware of the 'Firing' process. I imagine the firing of the minerals would kill any lurking pathogens.

I was not aware that akadama or kanuma were fired. I believe these are naturally occurring substances that are mined in Japan and as such could be contaminated with soils and other pathogens. Both are the result of natural clay deposits being heated by volcanic activity which turns the water to steam and effectively 'pops' the clay particles. The heat then hardens the clay to produce the final product in the ground. As this is a natural product produced at random there are various qualities and a range of expansion and hardening.
I assume that imports would be fumigated before being allowed through quarantine but as Ken says, that's up to AQUIS.

Perlite is a similar man made product (steam puffed clay) produced under ideal conditions so quality can be controlled.

Pumice is formed when lava comes in contact with water and puffs up and sets hard full of air bubbles. Again it is a natural product that is collected from the environment and would be contaminated with other natural substances. It would almost certainly be fumigated before or as it enters Australia.

Just an update,
I have placed my order this week for Akadama and Kanuma Shipment from Japan so expect delivery hopefully by the end of winter ( Just in time for Spring repotting
I will advise later when I have firm shipping dates and will be taking preorders so we can expedite delivery.

I have customs import Certificates lined up and all should be fine to get the shipment off the docks with little delay which wil be nice.
