A very generous application of Indol-3-Butyric Acid.
Any theories as to why a layer would form thick callus and no roots?

Again, does not look like a cedar to me although there are several species other than Cedrus that have had been give common names with 'cedar' in them. Toona australis (an Aussie native) is called Red cedar. Thuja plicata is Western red cedar and could look superficially similar to this one.

I had the impression that auxin can sometimes cause callus growth that in turn can inhibit root growth. I looked up the literature and it wasn't straight forward, in fact very complicated. There are many examples where auxin does improve root growth in air layers. On the other hand auxin can in some cases cause callus growth and even inhibit root elongation. Short answer, I have no answer.

I hit the today too and all i learnt was:

1. As you documented - it's all too complicated for my noggin, except callus inhibits roots.
2. Camellia air layers should be started in Spring and removed successfully in 3 - 6 months.
3. Obtain my next Camellia from a professional nurseryman.

Thanks for the pictures Max and Kevin. That sasanqua callus is absurd! I might just go for the dig out me thinks.
