The trunk suggests a tree that is ancient and has struggled with every conceivable nasty thrown at it. But the top is suggestive of a young, vibrant healthy plant.

I does not work, it's incongruous.

i agree with you totally paul, but that is his taste and still makes an awesome tree. or just maybe he has plans for it in the future. :D

yer. i agree. i think that it should be thinned out HEAPS and a bit more carving on the top. and remove some of the branches.

One of the things I really like about this site is that people can have different opinions on certain things, but it is still done in a friendly manner.
In nature, you often see plums that have had a severe attack by insects (probably borers or grubs) and the foliage is still vibrant. I think its one of the real possitive features of plums. It shows its resilience against adversity,
I really like the contrast.

this is definatey something to consider and had thought that myself. shouldnt matter how much punishment a plum recieves. if it lives and finds its vigor, this example is a possible scenario. paul i do hear where ya coming from and that tells a different story. :D

In some cases it is best to say nothing and just let them think you are an idiot instead of opening your mouth and proving them right.
But often Homer takes over and I can't help myself

i think its a very clever bit of work to disguise the massiveness of the former trunk & create some credibility of age & design instead of having a huge heavy looking base. knowing plum trees & also the owner, i believe he still has some plans for its top design to better suit the basal design. a work in progress & will follow its future developement with interest. its hard to critisise an unfinished tree, so i say well done to this point, but i want to see what happens from here. cheers miyagi.

Yes the carving is good. I did not mean the tree was hopeless just that I don't like the current image. I would love to get some cutters to it ;)

if you understand plums, & not many people have been able to (each to his own species), then cutters at this point will not help the tree. it needs growth at the moment, light trimming as the season developes & major styling over winter while the tree is dormant. i was too late to finalise styling on one of my large plums this winter & now i have to let it do the growth season & do it next year. i believe the tree is in progression at the right stages. cheers, miyagi.

Wasn't talking about horicultural I was talking about styling and how the foliage does not go with the base.
I looked in at the branches to see the size of them in relation to the trunk and felt that was also an area that needed improving.
Maybe it was elaborated on at the meeting but it was posted here as "on show"
Like I said in training I would love to get my cutters to this and it may not be straight away but as on show this tree does not tell the correct story I think.
