As an update on the Japanese maple featured as example 2 above I have to report that both the grafts took but, unfortunately, both worked on the wrong side. Instead of getting new roots the tree now has 2 new trunks growing from that root That's something I have had happen before when grafting branches onto a trunk (except then I got a new root instead of a branch) Just goes to show that thread grafting may be simple but success is not guaranteed.

I had some pictures but not sure where they are filed.

Sometimes a tree just keeps telling you it doesn't want to be the style you want. this one has had enough chances at ROR so now I've potted it up higher in the pot without the rock and the long root is now a twisting trunk.

I think this whole thread and this last set of photos is interesting - an eye opener for me. In relation to these latest pictures - 6 years to form a foundation of what appears to be a lovely nebari and the basis for a lovely tree. I particularly like the movement in the first trunk and can actually picture a tree. (Sounds an odd thing to say but often I can't picture a future tree from a stump. Funny I picture a forest but not a tree ... there's a saying there somewhere! ) Along with this thread here from Mike viewtopic.php?f=129&t=20065 we've all got the knowledge to progress ... It's got me thinking and wanting to try stuff, that's for sure.

What a great example of time and good technique can produce. wrcmad, what's the plan for these? More trunk and root development? Or is it time to concentrate on the branches?

First pic will transition to branch development and refinement this year.
Second one has a year or 2 to go in development.
Third one is my sumo project - developing for a few years yet.

I would like to add my thanks to Neil and wrcmad for this post, they say a picture is worth a thousand words but this post is priceless. The pics and descriptions make the process clear even for me, even though I am probably too old to have the time to use it.
