So would it be better to wait a couple of more weeks then do both? I'm not sure there is enough roots at the moment.

Does it have a lot of roots? Edit - sorry, didn’t finish reading your post. Maybe give it another week and see what the status of the roots are. Technically you’ve got another 6 weeks of summer so if it stays warm you can probably get away with separating the layers in a couple of weeks.

It looks like a success, both are doing well.

I'll leave the big chop until late winter or early spring or would it be best to wait until the new growth have hardened off?

So after the chop I have got this, the first shoot is 12 cm from the base and the second about 20 cm. It's looking a bit boring and I was wondering if it is to late to maybe chop it again lower down? I probably want to keep the finished tree under 50 cm.

If I cut the current years growth hard will it promote more shoots on the trunk or just at the cut site on those shoots?
Any thoughts on where to go with this would be helpful.
