What a great trio of trees to work with, sad you can only pick two of three. Personally I don’t think it matters which two trees there all worth working on. Can’t wait to see the results

I definitely think there is some potential in both the Mugo and Shimpaku. You have some nice trunk work in the shimpaku and the Mugo looks like it could have some really nice cutting if you can't think of a style for the tree as is.

Either way sounds like a great trip, very keen to see how it all goes

While nothing official re: Bonsai week’s visiting masters, I can only imagine that with today’s 14 day self-isolation announcement from the Australian Government for people arriving from O/S- unless, they have already landed - the visiting masters wont be able to apply their knowledge to those attending Bonsai week in Canberra.

Expert advice notes social distancing is a very important aspect of managing the spread of C19 in the community, to protect those most at risk and ease the burden on health services. Makes sense to defer or cancel, if that is the decision by the organisers or other powers.

Thanks Paul. I was unaware - my bad for not being on that bookface thing. Looks like a road trip with my wife ... and a walk around Canberra that weekend.

Yeah, that truly sucks... really sorry to hear that, there’s worse stuff in life but I stand by my first statement. I feel bad for you MJL, hopefully you’ll get a “re-do” at some stage.

There are far worse things happening to people than missing a road trip. I and others were fortunate to be selected in the first place. Now the focus should be on supporting those directly impacted either physically, economically, mentally or any other way.

Hey All,
I might start a separate thread but I woke up this morning with an idea about the Shimpaku pictured earlier in this thread.
Come spring, perhaps I could sink the pot in a garden bed to make it easier to lower/anchor some of the elongated branches into a ground tray; after stripping bark off the underside of those branches. A bit like this drawing. Over time I could end up with numerous rafts and also a stumpy inner tree. Make sense... or should I leave it long and leggy for a future workshop?
This is what was in my head as I chugged a morning coffee.

Ignore my last daft post - went outside - no way some of those branches will bend down like that; a man that didn’t sleep well and woke up fuzzy!

That sounds like an incredible opportunity <3 I recently visited Missouri, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a bonsai festival near my hotel. It was a wonderful event showcasing various bonsai styles and offering workshops similar to what you’ll experience. There were beautifully crafted junipers and pines, just like the ones you mentioned. I’m excited to see what you create from your bonsai journey
