I hear you Tim.

I'm the same with Junipers, as much as I like to look at them I have little interest in growing them. I am trying my hand at a few deciduous trees, tridents and Japanese maples, liquid amber and one experimental Melia azedarach (white cedar) mostly for the winter silhouette. Living in Sydney I rarely see much Autumn colour so any colour that I do see will be an added bonus.

There is a nice article on ABC News today about the Fagus, Australia's only winter deciduous tree.

Re the comment about the lack of deciduous natives.

The first that comes to mind is the native crepe myrtle Lagerstroemia fraserana from northern Queensland which looses its leaves in late winter. I also understand that there are a couple of gum trees in the Northern Territory that loose their leaves at the end of the wet season. I am sure that there are others as well.
