Cut down plastic plant pots are a good option for long term containers.
One problem with cut down pots is no rim to grip if you need to pick up or move these. Someone once posted a nifty solution - save the rim you cut off the top of the pot and stitch it back on the shorter pot with a few twists of wire or anything that will hold it in place. Now you not only have a comfortable rim to grip but the pot is also reinforced with 2 thicknesses of plastic near the top.

I have no problem moving them. I just pick the pot up from the sides.
