G,day Craig I have some hopes to get some growth in the top area on the left. It seems to pop every where else except where I want ,ah well patience. Might have to move a couple of branches around with wire. I am going to extend the carving, up a bit to alleviate the suddenness of the end.

When I was watering yesterday I saw another possibility, for the viewing angle to be changed. That will have to wait, as I am busy with re potting, and getting things ready for the clubs annual auction at the end of the month.

Then it is off to sunny Queensland for a weekend of Bonsai, lucky me.

An update on the progression as of today. I decided that the hollow did not appear to be quite right, so I have cut thought the roots and spread the bottom of the trunk to give the impression of the big hollow trunk trees that you drive a car though.

Still some way to go next re pot will see the separation at the base more, also some more fine wiring as of this moment out of the wire I need so it is off to the store.

Some thinning has been done, as you know Casuarinas are apical dominant so this has to be kept under control. Sumi ink and lime sulphur for protection at this stage.

I would love to see this tree in a round pot, even as a trainer.

It would also be a great candidate for a 360 as well...................but more on that later perhaps ?

I must say that I like what you have done here. I agree that the tree has a year or two to go to look really good, but what I really love is that you have taken a fairly bland tree (or maybe I should call it stereotypical, not bland - you know what I mean), and broken the standard styles rule book with it to make it into something that takes us out of our comfort zone a bit more. You may find that there are less people that like it now, but those that do will like it far more than before. More of us should try this!

Have you considered putting a second tree in with it. Father/son or mother/daughter type of thing? I think the "two" trunks you have now and the look of age, along with a second (third) trunk could make a lovely image. The old broken and battered parent shielding its progeny. I think this could really look good. You could even use a cutting for the little one!

Hello Pup,

Interesting Project. From the earlier pictures on, my eye was drawn to the straight pencil like section above the carved burnt area. I think this is emphasized a bit more now with all the character of the lower section. An idea would be to create a new leader with some movement from a side branch half-way up the pencil section.

Anyway, you know the score: my opinion, your tree. Something to think about.

Now to you're as I said a bit of developing to go. That part is a candidate for the drill and bend method, that Grant has shown here later. I want to get more separation on the base, but must let it recover from the work done.

Next season when I do more separation, I hope to have more wiring and the bending done.

With this project as by the title it is an ongoing thing, last time I said I wanted more seperation of the bottom, and some wire up top to put a bit more curve.

Today I did that, and now have the top slightly bent some more later. You will also see that when I seperated the bottom , the top of the hollow closed round so we now have a hollow trunk happening near the solid top.

i havent seen or read to much about trunk hollowing
did you remove it all at once?
i was under the impression that it had to be done slowly
if one was to remove all the sap wood in one go the tree would die?

Matty, both sides of the separated trunk have sap wood, so the sap flows up and down just as it would on a solid trunk.

You can hollow the whole tree out as long as you leave the live veins, for the sap to flow.

Wowsers!
