What about the eucalypts, will they tolerate being collected? There one that I really love it has a very old narly base with beautiful bark but the it stands at about 2.5 metres so I would have to give it a chop at about 50-70cm or so. But is a euc like this going to be ok aswell do you think.
Thanks very much again for all your help :D

Hey Hugh, There is a ground cover version of the Acacia Howitii which is what most people use as bonsai, I have tried to work with the normal version and they are not great. (The ones I had ended up in my parents garden)I would encourage you to look for the ground cover type and then use a piece of bamboo and twist tie them up till they harden.

Hugh, don't know if this info helps, but yesterday evening i went to dig up a baby gum tree from a friends block ( i didn't particularly want to wait till spring, in case to grew too much taller). It was incredibly tough to dig up, even though it was only about a foot high. Dry,Rock hard soil around it, and the root runs straight down to find moisture...it was a little bugger to get out. so maybe if you can wait for spring (which is when your'e probably supposed to collect native plants)... or at least maybe wait for rain to soften the ground :)
