Now that I've seen the picture Tony took I can see that I took the turn a bit far in my shot. I think from the angle in his photo it's a happy medium between the two. It's only enough so you can only just see the seperation. See below.

It's certainly come a long way since your first pics! Very lovely tree.

I repotted this to the angle I wanted in the pot in spring last year. Since then I’ve pruned it once or maybe twice.

I’ve been letting it grow freely for a while to build up strength, and while the new outer growth was healthy, the interior has been suffering with a build up of scale and sooty mould. Dropped the ball on this and should have got onto it earlier.

I’ve opened it up now and given it a good clean to remove all the scale and sooty mould. These Kunzea baxteri are very susceptible to white scale. It’s not an issue if you keep on top of it though.

I’ve not had any issues with my trees.

I find them very very hardy, very tolerant to neglect (), both full shade and periods of under watering, but love full sun watering / feeding and regular pruning, and bud back nicely too (some might be a bit weak for awhile but with time comes good). ie a great Australian species for Bonsai.

How does the deadwood behave over time? We don’t have this species growing locally so I don’t have much to go on. Does it need treating or is it hard enough to hang around on its own?

Whilst I haven’t had any with deadwood for a really long time, I’ve never treated any of it. It seems to be pretty hard and has hung around on its own so far.
