Joel wrote:I agree with Pup. Ficus rubiginosa. The petioles are too short for Ficus macrophylla. The presence or absence of hair means very little due to variation. Same goes with leaf size. Are there any larger ones like this nearby? If so, take a photo of the bark, any fruit (still connected if possible) and the basal flair.

Just went back to the site and found a lotof these Ficus around.
I hope these updates will help.
Cheers.

Not an expert but it definitely looks like F. rubiginosa to me. It has very little flair at the base (where F. macrophylla does) and the trunk is grey not brown. The fruit are in pairs on a short peduncle. Id say you are right.

I did study both F. macrophylla and F. rubiginosa (and others) at TAFE. I just checked my notes and i got it the right way around so do my notes count? Taken from a well trained hort i might add.....

I have just got put my Book from rainforest to Bonsai, by the late Len Webber. Pages 112 though to 114 he describes Ficus rubiginosa. He points out that the Americans beat us to naming 3 distinct variety's F, rubiginosa var rubiginosa, F ,rubiginosa var pubescens, and F, rubiginosa australis.

The leaves on rubiginosa are length 10-12-cm wide 5-6cm. Shape oval to broad oval, apex obtuse, short blunt point. Base narrow or rounded.

Margin Entire variable undulations, some plants often very conspicuous.
Surface Glabrous upside, pubescent underneath, which is variable from green to rusty. Hydathodes Visible in good light.Venation Visible both sides more conspicuous underneath.
Main vein Pale green upper thinning to a fine line which disappears towards the apex, raised on the underside. Basal veins, one or two pairs mostly,

So what you have there is a port Jackson fig going by Len Webbers run down. He is an or was an Expert.

So what ya reckon close it.

Cheers :D Pup
