There is also a bud an inch or less from the soil line that could be the new leader, build a head out of that.

baturb wrote:the top is still quite flexible, so I was thinking of layering the top and wiring in some good movement and feed it and let it grow on for a while, as for the rest Im not sure how I would go wiring the bottom, its quite thick and rigid already, and on a side note, it is hard enough to find JBP in Adelaide as it is, so no point in just chopping and throwing away what could possibly be turned into something
Virginia nursery, cleveland nursery... there are a few who stock both JBP and poorly grafted JRP. They are not that hard to find here, but all are pretty poor in regards to using as bonsai.
Young and hostile but not stupid.

Hi,

You picked a tough one to work with :) I must say. Depending on what you would like to do, the chop, new leader, feed like crazy
has a lot of merits. Please do not be discouraged, these are honest advices, my first pine was no where as tough as this one.

If you can wait and try layering just for the experience, then explore that option as well. I have done it successfully once on a
black-pine. Please find my post here https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=317

Cheers and best wishes.

thanks for all the responses, I do hold out hope for this tree one day, and while we are discussing JBP here is another of my works in progress, I think every one has to agree there is more character and movement in this ones trunk

yes, Ill keep updating as things go along, I used the ring bark method, , flaring a bit of the bark around the cut, I then wraped the trunk with spaghnam moss extending it above and below the cut, then filled the pot to the top with a good potting medium to prevent the moss from drying to quickly, I split a pot down the centre and taped the pot and tied it to the tree stopping it from falling down, Ill be waiting for the day I see the tree pushing new roots through the bott of the pot

just an update on the air layer I did on the big JBP, I was looking over and tidying up my trees today and looked at the pot around the air layer and there are roots poking out everywhere, I will leave it a bit longer before I seperate the top but I am very pleased that the layer worked, after reading some horror stories on layering JBP, now the thing I have to plan is a way to go with the bottom after the top is removed, the plan for the top is to put it into a grow box and feed and let it go for a season or two, I will post pics in the next few days after I seperate them

tall and skinny-if there is decent nebari down there, you could go crazy with bending machines and wire and make a sinuous literati and end up with a believable plant in a relatively short time.
