They where box thorn, the berries.....

Pity you threw thoem, they do well as bonsai and once you remove the thorns they are easy to keep under control.

Pittosporum multiflorum. Previously Citriobatus pauciflorus. Australian native with edible berries. They make GREAT bonsai. A guy at my bonsai class has some VERY nice examples. Shame.

I havent thrown them just yet, but i would be planning to.

the only thing that stopped me is a cold beer after work and rain!!!.

From the pictures i am looking at on the internet both boxthorn and blackthorn dont look like what i have.

i think in this case better to be safe than sorry, anyone got a picture of a boxthorn or blackthorn bonsai?

Do you have better photos of what you have? Its difficult to see. Any fruit? Where are the prickles coming from? Are the leaves discolorous? I might be able to get a photo of a nice tree, but even if i could, it would take 3 weeks.

Pittosporum multiflorum, thats it, just googled it and that it what it is.

i might keep them after all, what is the common name? I assume you clip the thornns off?

Most of the stock i had to choose from was badly chewed by cattle, and the rest was spindly, the stuff i got is small but has good structure, so i think i good practice anyway.

Sorry Gareth, I'm not sure what the common name is. Somebody else from the School of Bonsai has a few nice ones. His have very well developed thick clouds of foliage. I cant remember if he prunes the thorns off or not. Ill ask him for some advice next time i see him, possible tomorrow night.
