Hi Jamie, have you given a thought to maybe it is the media mix you are using ?? Maybe keeping too wet.

Hi Jamie,

With Figs, i put the fresh "fruit" in water overnight (sometimes over a couple of days if i get lazy) to soften. I then crumble them up and spread them over kitchen paper until they are just dry. Its ok if they are still clumped together. You can break them up by crumbling them over the media. For the media, try 80 percent fine sand, 20 percent peat moss/coir moss (as fine as peat though) and tamp down well. Water it well. Sprinkle seeds then water again. Dont cover the seeds. Leave it somewhere where it will receive morning sun or bright light, but not direct sun. Wait.

I have grown F. virens, F. obliqua, F. rubiginosa and F. macrophylla this way.

I have thought it might be the medium, im using diatomite fines (2mm or less) with a dash of organic, thought that might be alright.

what Joel has said is possibly the problem, I have done what he said apart from the direct light, I have them out getting sun all day, so that might be an issue... might move them into less direct light, see how that goes.

Someone gave me a cluster fig 'fruit' last year. When I broke it open it had little crawly things in it so I planted it under a fine sprinkling of soil. Within days, the pot was a carpet of tiny green shoots. Problem was the possums dug them up to get at the fig underneath. Some more came up, but they all died - not really sure why.

Well it seems I jumped the gun some with the fig seed! We have received around 24 hours of steady rain since yesterday and I hadnt been able to get outside, it cleared up this arvo and went and checked out my seed trays and to my surprise i have masses, and masses of tiny little seedlings! i couldnt get the grin of my face! up until this lot of seed sowing I have had zero luck, and it has now started to take of, along with the fig seed i put down zelcova, coastal and giant redwood, River redgum, Casuarina esquitifola(spelling?), swamp cypress and chinese elm.
So far I have had the cassa, redgum, redwoods, a couple of zelcova and fig germinate!!

the chinese elm was put down a little later than the others, and the zelcova had a little mishap involving my daughter deciding to grab a couple of handfuls and mix them up a bit better ohwell, they will still be in there.

with the amount of seed that has germinated, I will more than likely be selling some of them off, I will put a thread in the market place when it is time to move them on.

the variety is Ficus Hilli as far as we were able to Identify the parent tree. cheers mate.

they are destined for a dugz frame fused style tree.

there will be several different species i will be doing this with actually, I have had a heap of chinese elm pop, as well as redwood, so it is going to be fun to work!
shohin size trees ofcourse somewhere around the 20cm tall mark with a trunk thickness up to around 10cm depending on how many i have
