Here are a few of mine.

I'm seeing some very nice looking trees in here, but I'm pretty sure they aren't all shohin? Ie. no more than 20cm tall?

yeah. not sure too. not more than 20cm from base to top or from bottom of pot to top?? lol

i measure all mine from soil base up to the top. dont know if that is correct way or not.

the measurements are different for everyone, some say no more than 20cm, others say no more than 25cm, and others beleive if you can hold the tree and pot in one hand comfortably it can be regarded as shohin, which is a good way as literati type trees generally are a lot taller.

tree measurements are from soil surface to top of tree, thats where i go from anyways

Morten Albek is considered, to be the European guru of Shohin. His measurement is Maximum for Shohin from the lip of the pot to the top of the tree is 25cm (10" )

down to 10 cm ( 4" ). Mame size is Maximum 10 cm ( 4" ) down to 7cm ( 3" ). Mini Bonsai (Japanese Shito ) 7cm ( 3" ) or less. They should still resemble tree's though the pot ratio can be tolerent as for the small amount of soil.

Also.....the collective noun for bonsai is ..... bonsai !

Well pointed out Leigh. I usually expound that the word BONSAI may be used as a singular noun, collective noun, verb or adjective whatever, without any change in spelling.

I am with you guys on this one, we did however have this discussed on an earlier thread and I was shot down . So now I let them in there ignorance get on with it.

Yep - I agree as well.

Another one that bugs me a bit is 'My Bonsai Trees'. Um, doesn't Bonsai mean 'Tree in a tray', or 'Tree in a Pot'? If so, My Bonsai Tree translates to 'My Tree in a Tray Tree'. I've seen it stated as a Bonsai Tree on many forums - and by well known people who should know better.

Oh, and the other classic: 'Bonzoi' as stated by a well known Australian TV personality - he also called the Japanese Kimono a 'Frock'.

I have just started an Olive that was bought for $3-00 at the club auction. Also a couple of others going along nicely. Olives do not have to be big.

Thought I would show a shohin in the making, and this is part one. Its a Zelcova that I dug from a garden in Goulburn a couple of years ago. First potted August this year and is now about 22 cm tall. Lots of work yet, but should be fun.
