I was hopeing that someone would have an opinion on which side of the trunk the new branch should be positioned. I'm think of filling in the gap on the left, what do you think?

I agree with you to the left, to fill the bigger gap in and to get the triangular shape , but then again I am only a novice myself but again it is a nice looking tree, just love em, I cannot get enough of them.

I had a real close look at this tree last weekend and I am now so certain of wiring it to the left. I may wire to the right and try to take the branch around the tree and attempt an in arch graft so it emerges on the left side in a better position?
Any ideas?

G'day Watto, i'm going to say train that new shoot up as your new leader, build a new apex, and to be totally honest if this were my tree i'd probly remove all the branches and start from scratch. No doubt you've already thought about that, i believe you would end up with a better tree in the long run , .

I have been thinking about your suggestion for a few days Craig, but I don't think I could bring myself to cut all the branches off. I understand they are a bit think (and rigid) but that is part of the tree's charm in my opinion. New thinner branches in perfect position would not be in keeping with the curve of the trunk IMHO, but I do thank you for making me exercise my mind.

Hi Watto,

We are going to do a triple inarch on the Crab apple in our back of house at the NBPCA in early August.

It failed to pop buds in the desired location so we are taken matters into our own hands.

Thanks for the info Grant, I might need to come and have a look. The new branch on mine is no longer. I got a bit too adventurous with it and it snapped. I was a bit sad with that but it is one of the risks.
