Thanks for the tips jamie. I did use a cheap long nose pair of pliers and managed to twist ...the nose of the pliers I actually ran out of medium size wires used this thick one instead. I live 2 minutes away from a Bunnings that has Japanese wires in all sizes but the price is ...holy dear.
I really hope it will pull through too.

as long as the wound is seal it should be fine.

u can also use grafting tape to tape arouund it. or even a aluminum foil

John I wouldnt worry about sealing that wound on that pine. The sap should create its own sealant and i dont think the wound is that big really.

This tree is nice, but i would look at getting the top over the cascading branch a little more. but dont bend any more pliers

great work mate, I like what you have done with that little tree! however I personally would have left roughly 1cm excess on that big cut and let it die back naturally for a while before cutting it back at the trunk. in saying that, if you keep the wound well sealed and if you can keep it in good health, hopefully the fact that its quite young and where at the start of our growing season, it may have a good chance of survival! I just wouldn't do any more work to it for while to give it plenty of time to regain it's strength, because it's a substantial cut, its important not to let the trees health deteriorate or to let it's growth weaken! I think a little bit of dynamic lifter would be a good way to give it a little push along and really help the tree regain its vigour! good luck mate i really hope I see this tree in 12 months time
