well some good news. i checked the layers this weekend. 3 of the 9 went to plant heaven. the first one i cut off, thinking it was definately about to join the other three was nicely calloused and just starting to shoot out roots. i quickly potted it up and covered it with plastic so we will see how it goes. two others have roots so they are now in pots. waiting for the others to show roots thru the plastic...exciting though!!!

"exciting though!!!"
You betcha bottom dollar it is!! I have no layers going atm, I am really thinking hard what to layer from my native garden trees. I know in a year if I don't now I'll be thinking "gee I wish I had put a layer on this or that a year ago"
I have a lovely callistimon which could do with a few.
It makes me happy you are having success. Thanks for keeping us posted.

yeah i am pumped. i thought for sure they were all goign to fail. all the greenery above the layer wilted and dried out a fair but and nothing new grew at all but nature has a way of fighting back as it seems. so much stock to play with and trade now!

Gratz bud,
All that worrying and it didnt end up being as bad as you thought it was. Look forward to seeing the layers once they get going & also the mother once she is bared of them, that was a really nice piece of stock... cant wait to see where you went with it!
I am getting ready to chop my big pear layer, it has over 18" of growth since I reworked the calous but still no roots. I will cut all the growth back to a single leaf & off with its head, treat it like a giant cutting as you are doing with the one you cut & all should be fine.
