A very common object I've seen recently being used is a CD/DVD - preferably one you've finished with, or not started. If I had a large tree that was good enough to have its picture displayed, I'd use a champagne/bubbly bottle rather than a beer bottle.

Here's what I've standardised on now:
Standard bonsai shears
Korean Hornbeam
Common Wych Elm (Ulmus Glabra) shohin.
New pots
Or my favourite - and something I generally have to hand...and a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine
Chinese elm
White pine
Lonicera nitida

How about an iphone next to it?
May not be such a good idea if you are using it to take the pic in the first place

Generally it's a good idea to use something that everyone has access to and/or some experience with and of universal size. Using an Iphone would be just as useful as me using my old SE k800i (only excluding the fashion statement).

I think the drink can would be one of the best. Everyone has those or can get hold of one. Least it gives a better idea of trunk thickness.
So guys lets just stick with the drink can.
