Yeah true - I never really think of a "style" when I am working on a tree, including this one. I rather work with the tree's potential.
If it is formal, informal...it doesnt really matter. I like the tree, I hope you do too.
Thanks Dave. I can see what you are getting at. I do like that idea. I do also like the tree with the branching upright, similar to what a trident would do naturally. This tree was started in 1992, I guess if I get bored with it I might restyle it with that in mind.

Re: Small Trident
Hi again LKPG.
I see you have no bonsai age in your profile, so I assume you are a newbe!
Looking at you photo again, I notice the leaf size is rather large. A couple of tips to reduce leaf size.
1)After your early Spring high nitrogen feed, then use a lower nitrogen fertilizer such as Mautec "Bloom Booster". It is higher in P.K. and lighter in N.
About Xmas, completely defoliate. ie take off every leaf, cutting half way up the leaf stem.
Your leaves will come back smaller and your defoliation will increase your branch ramification.
Your normal trimming you should cut back, leaving only 2 leaves and do it before the shoot gets too long.
If you know all this just ignore!!
cheers

Re: Small Trident
Thanks Dave,
All good advice. Personally I dont defoliate, unless my foliage gets too burnt. I rather create smaller foliage by increasing the nodes in a small area. The more nodes in a defined area, the smaller the foliage would be. The foliage on this tree is quite small, but the size of the tree is only about 25cm, so the foliage may appear fairly big.
Sorry, havent figured out my bonsai age, guess its been over 20 years.
Good advice on the fertiliser though. This is not dissimilar to what I am already doing. I think alot of beginners forget about fertilising......really, if you want a nice bonsai quickly, dont forget to feed your tree appropriately. (That is for everyone's benefit - not yours Dave).

Re: Small Trident
The other thing you can do to get small foliage is to place your tree in full sun.
I guess this one has been in a bit of shade - mainly due to the heat we have been having cobined with the small pot that it is in. Here is a pic of the foliage compared to a pic of the foliage of a larger group setting that I have sitting in full sun. You may also note that you will get alot more colour in your foliage if it is placed in full sun.
Sorry about the lack of focus - guess my camera isnt too good.
Small Trident Foliage
Group Foliage
Giving full sun keeps the nodes closer together, thus helping to create smaller foliage. Accompany this with lots of growing (feed, water and sun) and lots of trimming, and this is the result you could have. I have not defoliated either the group or the small trident.
This is not aimed at anyone - just some of my observations.
