Definitely the best side whichever you go with. Would be trying to remove the lump if possible.

Figs are fine for bare rooting. Root prune and soak in a seasol solution for a few minutes before potting is good.

it can be hard to wait until next spring
you could do a full root prune and repot into new soil
I always soak in seasol before and after root pruning
I also use thrive it is very good at reducing shock and helps them bounce back from major work
it is worth the cost

if you do root prune now ...
get a big old wood saw and saw straight through 1/2 to 2/3 of the root mass and hose out and untangle the remaining roots
I try to leave some portion undisturbed and other parts dig right through to the top this will aid water and soil penetration
prune off every leaf and any unwanted branches
then re-pot,you can use some chunky orchid mix at the bottom of the pot and then osmocote and blood and bone etc mixed in the lower 1/2 of the soil,
put a (1 or 2" ) layer of plain potting mix on top to sit the roots on
you can also add crushed charcoal and diatomite in the mix
then water in well using seasol and thrive
pat it down a bit and keep it out of the wind
because there are no leaves,you can go full sun but water it sparingly if there are no leaves as they expire excess water
once new growth appears (2 - 8 weeks) you can water it normally and keep any bugs off.

The Fig got a very heavy root prune today and had its "Pole" taken down. I'm confident it will be fine. As usual, once I had exposed more of the roots that were hidden under the soil, a much wider and more complex nebari appeared. this was sorted out then re-covered with soil to help with recovery.
