I've had no real trouble with dissectum seedlings - pick them as late as you can get away with, a few months in dampish sand in the bottom shelf of the fridge and up they come. Horrible losses when I tried to pot them on in summer... And the damn things thicken very slowly indeed. And the leaves are determined to stay large.

Double sealed in plastic bags, clearly labelled, extensively explained to extremely patient partner - and yes, a particularly frosty reception. It hasn't apparently helped me germinate. Good for maples.

Hi Matt,
When I used to propigate from seed in big number I found that I could plant the seed as soon as they were harvested but if I planted the seed too early(ie Feb, March, April and early May) then the seed would often come up straight away and then either get hit by frost, get eaten by insects, snails etc or you would just have to protect them over winter.
Better to sow them once the chance of early germination is over; say late May or so in your climate.
This way they get a cold few months and then come out strongly in spring and grow through any problems they might encounter.
I never stratify as this always seemed to impede the seed rather than help; but I did live in a cooler climate as well.

I live in Adelaide and I planted some JBP seeds that sprouted about a month ago, I am hoping they will last over winter. However, I have some more JBP seed. What is the best way to store them until may when I can safely sow them? I also have a shari-load of maple seeds of different varieties (ginnala, truncatum, trident, many cultivars of japanese) and some stewartia, korean hornbeam, liquidambar formosana and possibly some JWP if I can convince my new found source to give me some
How should I store them & when should I sow each of them. obviously maples need winter stratification, but what about hornbeam's and stewartia's? Do JBP and JWP require any treatment prior to sowing usually?

Storing seeds should not be a problem
Place in a sealed Dry Jar or plastic container in a Dry dark spot.
I sow all my seeds in Early spring, but have never done any JBP.

I tend to stratify all non native seeds. It gives me very even and thourough germination. I used to use Peat/sand but after a few rotted off in the fridge, I switched to fine vermiculite (Bunnings) and found it much easier to achieve that ''just moist'' conddition. Standard is in- june 1--out sept. 1 4C. I pot them in the vermic. then put the pot in a plastic bag w/holes.

I have never heard of using vermiculite as a stratifying medium. But then again, my friend told me to use my diatomite fines that I have sieved out and I hadn't heard of that either. And to make me look like I know absolutely nothing
