One thing in Bonsai is really nothing is new it is recycled every 50 or so years. However the word Shito for the smallest size is new.
On,once again the insistence of the western world.

Mame used to encompass all sizes up to 15cm, after that they became shohin, Shohin meaning small goods, and Mame meaning little bean. Again the need for these rules that the westeners love so much. they needed some distinction between the smallest of the little bean size, and the larger so Shito was used to do this, about 40 years ago, I could be wrong but it is new.

All the size have a rough finishing size as they are also the staring size of the next one up or the next one down.

A rough guide is as follows, Shohin maximum height 25cm, minimum size 10cm. Mame maximum 10cm minimum 7cm. Shito 7cm or less.
This size is the smallest and in some cases a leaf is used to replace a branch. I still believe it should look like a tree.
Yes I do wire my trees if the need it as putting the branch where you want it takes less time than clip and grow. Using the right material allows you to get a good Miniature tree in a very short time.
