Great topic astro
There are a host of native species that flower very well as 'bonsai'. Some are: Grevilleas, verticordias, kunzeas, melaleucas, tea trees, banksias, baeckeas, micromyrtus and more.

I'll try to get a few photos ready and post them next week.

Regarding prunus and relatives, these are ripe for adding a bit of 'culture' to the styling. In both Japan and China, they are major elements in art. There are a host of meanings attached to their use, for example: perseverance and purity, vigorous old age and renewal (first blossoms in spring), and many more. Very often, the branches are portrayed as very rugged, massive trunks and major branches, with craggy sharp angles, then with exuberant straight new growth sprouting wildly from the old branches, laden with bright flowers in early spring. Gentle s-bent forms are not preferred lines. Bonsaiists could try to emulate some of these 'styles'.

Cheers
Roger

I look foreward to the future of this prunis mume,
This photo was taken a few days ago, blossoms in June! :lost:
After a few years of thickening and styling it should be a great winter display

hey gerard,

are blireana good to work with?

my prunus mume are flowering now too. my double white is all out in bloom, my weeping double pink is about to burst any day and my new addition which got from Leong at Bonsai South on Saturday morning is half in bloom.

Below are pics of my new mume. I tidied it up a bit and started some carving. My carving bit was blunt so only got halway thru it. here are some pics. I love the potential this tree has
