Thanks Roger!! That information is really helpful to me 
I am new to bonsai and although I have read in various places to tell a story etc, it had completely slipped my mind that this is one of the key aspects to creating good, believable trees/bonsai.
It is hard to see in the pics, but the root that I cut off just above the soil line is the thinest root that is also protruding slightly higher than the others.
