Re: Try number 3
Hey Craig, That looks amazing, what a fantastic virt, thankyou so much.
Just a couple of things, the upright section of trunk would be leaning away from the viewer here, the first branch on the left starts at right & crosses the front of the trunk, trunk & 1st branch almost the same size (for the rule bound, all no-no's). For myself the canopy while nice is very full & the tree (as I see it) is lost. Spun 180 it would solve the first 2 points but would it work as well..?..
Jamie, They are a common landscape plant due to taking pruning well, a great substitute for Leptospermum. Budding is variable, mainly from the base & base of branchlets as well as shooting from the tips of growth left. Budding in other areas of the trunk is patchy at best.
I have experimented with another that is still in the ground, cutting it back to bare stumps at the same time I dug this one, while slow to start it is now shooting away like crazy. Depending how the current potted one goes I may dig it next year.

Re: Try number 3
Lovely trunk there Matt
I have a couple I picked up at nursery closing sale a year or so ago
I put 2 in the ground and when you cut back hard they will shoot our everywhere with new growth.
The other is in a pot now and is the same, They take wire very well, but get it on early as the old growth is very hard and brittle.

Re: Try number 3
It was just a thought ,
I can't say for sure without seeing the tree Matt, but i think the leanining away could be improved by rotating the tree a little anti-clockways and tilting slightly in the green arrow direction,. I wouldn't worry about crossing branches, they'll sort themselves out along the way, as i say, just a roughie but maybe something to get you inspired, thats the direction i would go with this tree

Re: Try number 3
HI MattA,
This Baeckea is flying!!
Has had a few very minor haircuts over the summer (it was getting a little Albert Einstein in appearance)
My question to yourself and a few others who have contributed on this thread is
What would you do with this tree if the more vertical of the trunks was removed?
Similar to the virt that Matt did.
I took your (Matt) advice and removed it. I preferred the idea of it gone, but now a little stuck as to where to go? Wish i hadnt seen this thread with Craigs plan on it
Love working with this tree, but some help would be great.
Would any more photos or current photos help?
P.S Matt the rest of the little guys are also flourishing, thanks a bunch mate.
Dave

Re: Try number 3
Hey Dave,
Its good to hear the trees are all pumping away for you and this one in particular is still throwing growth like crazy. I have another couple in the garden with my eyes on one for the future.
I still like the side you marked as left for my front maybe a little back towards marked front. I will try and draw what I was thinking for this tree soon.

Re: Try number 3
Thanks for the reply Matt, I must admit that is my favorite side aswell. The movement is awesome.
I also like the side labelled front if it was really jacked up tall and upright. There is the start of a very nice first branch hidden away. Problem is trying to get those front roots to play the game and hide somewhere.
What to do with that big knob on the front? Hollow it out maybe? would that be the most natural way of removing an old trunk/branch on this native?
