Hi V.S , mate i use anything that looks good in the foliage department .My preference was Juniperus sabina /Savin Juniper it handles almost anything i throw at it including neglect and forgetful watering . If you like flat line foliage it is one of the best , followed by the Shimpaku which has a natural growth habit resembling cloud like formation pads then it would have to be the Californian Juni's which are in the middle of the of the other 2 mentioned .
Cheers Guys Alpine

Hi V.S most nurseries have a throw out bench , its a good place to look for shitty old thin sticks in pots that can be utilized for the Phoenix Grafts .

Hi V.S i didn't seal this red gum root but i have sealed others in the past with lime sulphur when bleaching roots or driftwood .A snug fit is a must for the plant to fit into .I use stainless screws or solid brass , but if using older tougher stock i tends to split even if a pilot hole is drilled first .
I used an old brass hinge for the base restraint and gal perforated iron for the upper sections as well as coated wire .I don't think it will be long for these to hold themselves in place as the are very tight now .
Cheers Alpine

Well a 5 day project comes to a close .This was something a little different , now all i have to do is allow for a couple of seasons growth to fill it out and keep it trimmed .
Now for the next challenge , preparing for a huge delivery in the coming weeks .
Cheers and happy Bonsai / Penjing . Alpineart
