Mentioned in this thread, and in the singular other mention on the interwebs, is that the New Idea / PG Moore booklet dates to "the early sixties". This is nit-picking, but as the cover price is shown as 40 cents, it can't be any earlier than Feb 14, 1966 - when decimal currency was introduced. So mid-sixties, at the very least.

I have a very clean copy of the booklet, which I believe my mother bought for me at the time.

PS: I've just noticed the Southdown Press credit at the back of the booklet, which includes Melbourne's 3000 postcode. Australian postcodes were introduced in 1967.

Great thread ... I just checked, my oldest book is from 1964, but it's a Japan Publications, in collaborarion with a San Francisco office, and no mention of Australian bonsai

Legoman, I suspect "bonsai" held an entirely different meaning for most western folk, from post-WWII, probably until at least the late fifties.
