'Bonfire', 'Winter Flame' and 'Autumn Glory' have already been used for Japanese maple names but the 3 you guys have suggested don't seem to have been used yet. I like the sound of 'Wildfire'.

IMO it should follow the growers/cultivators name like Nesci Gold.
Also would like to get A.Palmatum Yellow seedling as well aka Shibui's Wildfire.

Received my English Oak Acorns yesterday, Thanks Shibui!

Got them all settled minus one that i lost when i came back with a few pots and found the dog playing around with a small acorn like object, tossing it into the air and catching it again. .

Put them in a couple of slightly different mediums and different locations, and a couple just in the ground out in the front yard. Hopefully will start seeing some sprouts in a couple of months!

Hey there have noticed that your selling snake bark maple seeds... Have tried to look for images on the net but yet to find any defined pics ( or of snake bark maple bonsais ). What colours are the leaves are they red, green, or ... Etc...?

How is everyones "fresh seeds" going?
Mine is slowly having new shoots.

I'm starting to see new germinating seed leaves in the garden and in some pots so spring cannot be too far away.
Seeds should be sprouting in warmer areas.

Here's my little Quercus Robur (English Oak) powering along.

Of the 20 Shibui sent me, these are the only 3 that have broken the surface so far. I varied the planting angle and depth of all the acorns to see what would happen. The green one was planted straight up, and the red one was almost on its side. As of the weekend these 3 will be living on the top shelf so they can get a little more sun.

A couple of weeks back I thought they were all dead, so I pulled one up to find a pretty decent sized tap root poking out the bottom so I carefully re-buried the acorn.

When should I be removing the tap root?

You can prune the main root at any time. I sometimes cut the tip off soon after it shows out of the seed. That forces laterals straight away. Even at this stage you could uproot them and cut the root and it will force lateral roots to grow.
You can also wait until next winter when there should be some lateral roots then cut the main root below some good laterals.

Quick question Neil, why is one red and one green?

I have no idea. Can't recall whether this is normal or whether you have germinated a new oak variety. Seed was collected under several different trees but all Q. robur so unless I mixed up an acorn from the Q. suber batch with yours they should all be English oaks.
Variation is always possible when growing from seed. Every seed is a slightly different combination of genes from both mother (the tree they came from) and father (who knows? - only the bees or wind knows who that was) so every seedling is a unique individual with unique traits and characteristics.

Only time will tell so keep an eye on it and let us know what happens.
