Red new leaves is normal for most tridents Homer. It happens in spring and whenever there are new leaves emerging. it is colour but probably not related to autumn leaves.

Sorry, not Bonsai, but some autumn pictures from my recent trip to the blue mountains.
These were taken in Blackheath.

That one of me holding the leaf, does anyone know what that is? Acer japonicum acontifolium was my best guess? Extremely beautiful tree.

Hi all, I had this tree on another post, but thought I would put it into Shibui's thread as well, my apologies for pushing in, but the colour is really nice. This is as dark as its going to get, the edges of the leaves are now just starting to brown off. Yes Neil, it has been getting cold here at night in the hills just south of Bendigo, we have had the wood fire going for the last 2 weeks. miyagiman

No need for apologies. The subject was intentionally left open in the hope we would get pictures and stories from all over together in one thread. That's great colour in a year with less cool than normal.

Itsfullofstars: that leaf you are holding does look like Acer japonicum but I thought the variety called 'aconitifolium' had more deeply divided leaves than those ones. There are lots of named varieties of A. japonicum. This could be a named variety or an unnamed seedling that someone has grown. Nice colour though.

I had cause to travel to Bathurst a couple of weeks ago (non Bonsai) and I was so happy to see the changes in the season happening down there. It was a pure pleasure to drive through the yellow, brown and red patches of bush around Bathurst. It was also great to see all the yellow Poplars along side the road. We don't get to see much of Autumn's influences up here in the Wide Bay and it has been 28 years since I lived in Sydney, spending the majority of those 28 years in either the Tropics or the Sub-Tropics.
Have made a note to self to visit down south more often at this time of the year.

No colour at my place this year. One of my Chinese elms has dropped half of its leaves but the other two are growing strong. My little crepe myrtle has reddish leaves and still has a few malingering flowers on it.

It stopped raining this afternoon and the sun came out just in time to get a few shots of the gingko which is close to full colour now.

The wind also dropped enough to unroll the backdrop and get a photo with a neutral background - getting a bit dark but worked out ok I think.

The Chinese elm leaves are hardly changing colour at all before dropping

English elms changed colour a few leaves at a time so a lot of leaves have fallen before the last ones changed colour. Not really a great display this year but more browns and orange in the colour this time.

Japanese maples have started to colour up now. Don't appear to be going to be really intense this year but I might still get something decent.

Here's a self sown trident seedling in the garden that has produced the deepest colour I have seen in a trident maple and that's not bad considering that everything else is so poor this year. Genetics? Position?

Murphy's Law, Neal - best colour is always on a tree you can't/haven't/won't use for bonsai.

Same here - all the tridents dropped pretty much the moment they coloured. Japanese. maples not colouring yet - I defoliated quite late, so most have hardly burnt their leaves at all... Zelkova leaves murky purple at best.

At last some Japanese maple colours starting to appear.

Another one still mostly green but the lowest branch has started to get some nice colour.

Little japanese maple just under 20 cm . Just at the end of its color. Patients have appreciated having it at the practice. Lots of questions asked

Thanks to everyone for sharing your lovely tree changes!

How quickly the change happens. This is my weeping Japanese Maple. First pic was Wednesday 11 May, 2016 and second pic was this morning, Monday 16 May, 2016. I've been taking daily photos of this for the last 3 weeks and the change starts slowly at first then it rockets along.





And on the flip side, this trident is still growing. Go figure!
