This trident had a repot today. I also gave the top a bit of a trim back and wired near the apex to remove some of the verticality that was irking me. I'll need to watch that in spring, wire and trident growth doesn't mix so well if you're not paying attention.
Another year and a bit more progression I think, I particularly like the way the roots are filling out ... the rest will follow in time.

A tidy up this morning for this trident... I like the way the canopy is starting to fill out.

Not yet Watto, but I am watching it, maybe in a week or two. There’s only one piece of wire so it’s fairly easy to keep my eye on.

I think your timing for wire removal is good, I went through on the weekend and removed the wire they had been on since autumn/ winter and it was probably a fraction early

Looks like a success to me.
Just out of interest, what did you use for the graft? Ie your own seedlings, propagated cuttings or tube stock? This is all pretty new to me.
Also I was wondering how tall the tree is?

I used some seedlings that shibui often puts up for grabs during winter. The actual tree came from him too so I figured that they were from the same/similar genetics, although I don't know how much this really matters when the grafts are for roots as opposed to foliage.
Don't know exactly but I'd say the tree is about 40cm or so from base to tip.

Just as an aside, the wire came off as predicted Watto ... about 10 days after your question ... no marks but it was snug, so ready. I managed to break off a random branch while removing it which sucked, but it's a trident - we'll move on in a month or two!

Sorry for the silly question but there are no really long inter-nodes left on your tree - do you let the branches grow out to thicken then cut them right back and start again?

I hope there’s no long internodes left!
It would be easier if there was, but that doesn’t make good bonsai, so yes… I try and cultivate a first internode that is short, let the branch grow out (thicken) then cut back in hard just above that spot and move to the next level of ramification. If the internode isn’t short… cut it off and start again… that’s life!

I had a request for an update on this tree, so here it is after a bit of a trim today.
I already cut it back once in mid September, so this is just a small tidy up. No repot for this tree in winter. I had planned one, but life happened and then I had a pine topple onto it and break off a decent piece of the lowest right hand branch, so the progress there has been set back. Ideally I'd like to see that branch longer/more ramified than the ones above. Anyway, bonsai is a long game - so onwards we go.
